What's next for Leftwich?

byronleftwich.jpg

Byron Leftwich was supposed to be a throwback of black quarterbacks, going away from the stereotype of run-first and throw-second. Compared to former stars like Doug Williams and Warren Moon, Leftwich came to the Jacksonville Jaguars with a nice pedigree and even bigger expectations.

Not so many years later and several ankle injuries removed (or maybe not removed), Leftwich finds himself without a home; earlier this season, the Jags decided to promote David Garrard and get rid of Leftwich's big contract. Bobby Petrino and the Atlanta Falcons saw opportunity and signed Leftwich, but his ankle still gave him trouble and Petrino bolted back to the NCAA.

And now, the Falcons don't want him either. So what now? Leftwich still has the arm and still has a good head for the game; it's just one of those "spirit is willing but the flesh is weak" situaitons; ideally, Leftwich would probably want to go to a team he could start for, someone like the Dolphins, Jets, maybe even the Redskins. But perhaps an even better idea would be to understand that his body just simply can't take the week in and week out brutality of the NFL, and to take a relegated role as a secondary QB for a team that really needs to have some one like a Brady Quinn/JaMarcus Russell type learn the ropes and have some guidance along the way; yes, that means taking a pay cut, Byron, but you can still provide a valuable service to a team, just not necessarily every down.
