T.J. Houshmandzadeh Signs With Seahawks - 'Championship' in Seattle?

UPDATE: Housh will 'officially' sign a multi-year contract (up to 5 years) worth approx $40 million with the Seattle Seahawks. Everything said earlier still applies...

We're hearing that either later today or tomorrow T.J. Houshmandzadeh will announce a free agent contract agreement with the Seattle Seahawks or the Cincinnati Bengals. The Vikings had been the front-runners all weekend, but Housh has left Minnesota without reaching a deal and now the focus shifts to Seattle and Cincinnati.

Signing T.J. Housh would fill a major hole in Seattle's offense as Deion Branch has clearly proven he can not be trusted as a featured #1 receiver. The Seahawks have made it a habit of overpaying for wide receiver talent of late. Lets not forget that aside from the Branch debacle, the Seahawks also got into a bidding war with the Minnesota Vikings for Washington-native Nate Burleson a few short years ago. Seattle overpaid for Burleson as a reaction to the Vikings snatching offensive lineman Steve Hutchinson from the Seahawks in a heated poison-pill laden contract.

Now the Seahawks once again find themselves in a bidding war with the Vikings, this time for Houshmandzadeh. While Housh's age is a concern, he clearly is the most distinguished free agent wide receiver available on the open market, and would instantly give the Seahawks some stability at a position that was absolutely decimated by injuries in 2008. With 'Championship' Whos-Your-Mama as the go-to guy, Branch could settle in nicely as a #2 option, a role far more suited for his diminutive stature and limited skillset. Signing Housh would also give the team some options on what to do with Burleson and Engram. If Engram can stay healthy at his advancing age, Burleson can be saved for return duty or could mix-in with Engram in the slot.

We'll know more about the dollars it took to ink Housh shortly, but this is a big move for Seattle if they can pull it off. Now the question remains, who will run the ball in Seattle now that Maurice Morris is gone to Detroit? Julius Jones? One has to wonder why the Seahawks haven't met with Derrick Ward yet? His stock and his ego have taken a big hit with the lack of interest, and Ward would be a significant upgrade over Jones. We're just sayin'.
