Tim Couch: NFL Career Sacked?
They say the higher you are the harder you fall. That couldn't be more true for Tim Couch right now. When the newly minted Cleveland Browns franchise selected Couch first overall in the 1999 draft, he was immediately pegged as the next 'Golden Boy' quarterback. Plagued by inconsistency and an inability to stay healthy, combined with an ego and an attitude that left many NFL insiders to conclude Couch was uncoachable, the Browns had no choice but to cut ties and move in a different direction after five long, unfruitful seasons. Green Bay, still looking for a successor to Brett Favre signed Couch in hopes of resurrecting his career. However, they too deemed him damaged goods and let him go as well. The third career strike came last week when the Chicago Bears called his agent in dire need of a warm body to replace an inept Jonathan Quinn who was clearly in over his head as a starting QB after the team lost incumbent starter Rex Grossman for the year due to a knee injury. If Couch had any talent left, you'd have figured the Bears would've jumped all over him. They didn't.
We wanted to look at Tim after he was well, after his elbow and shoulder had healed. We got a chance to do that this past week," coach Lovie Smith said. "Right now we think we're going in a different direction. The three guys we have on our roster right now is what we're going with." - Fox SportsCraig Krenzel? You know you've hit rock bottom when you can't convince a team to take a chance on you in the face of them having to start a rookie quarterback, mid-season, who probably hadn't even taken a practice snap with the first-team offense until about 10 days ago. Now, Tim Couch stands on the brink of career extinction with Canada perhaps offering the last bastion of pro football left available to him. So long Tim. Best of luck up North. And remember Tim, when in doubt, throw the darn ball out of bounds!
