The Buzz: Get Portis!

So, you passed on Clinton Portis at the draft. You were very afraid of the 2006 numbers and the fact that he had missed all of the preseason with injuries. But, lo and behold, you've had a revelation! You made a mistake, my man!

Why? Coach Joe Gibbs stated that Ladell Betts would get more touches than Clinton Portis. Well, he was right--but barely (Betts had a reception while they carried the ball 17 times each). However, Portis had 98 yards compared to Betts' 59, and Gibbs even insterted Portis at the goalline, something he did not do last year. So, does this bode well for Portis owners? Absolutely! Gibbs has always been an old-school smash-mouth coach (see John Riggins if you don't believe me), and with Portis getting this much confidence in game 1, look for him to really take off now. If you don't have Portis, get him! Don't trade more than a RB2 or a combo WR3/RB2 or 3 to get him, but you can always talk smack about Portis' injury history and play up Betts. Either way, you'll gain a lot--he could end up being a GREAT RB2 or even an RB1 if he can sniff the end zone much more than he did last year.

I don't usually jump on players who have injury concerns, but Portis to me is a lot different this year--while he may not be at the point where he was as a Bronco, he still is a valued commodity, and with talented RBs running (literally) thin, this may be a make or break opportunity. Roll the dice....
