Tennessee-San Diego NFL Playoff Preview

priv.jpgWhew, just making it under the gun. I left this game for last because, well, it's not that sexy of a game overall. The matchup is not at all what the other playoff games had this week, and to me, it's a no-brainer. It would take some major changes on both ends to make this game be different than what it should be.

First, the Titans kind of fell into the playoffs, a 16-10 winner over a second-string Indianapolis Colts team where it took them until the fourth quarter to put it away. After QB Vince Young did not display the improvement many thought he would move to after a good rookie year, the Titans defense has been the real story all year, as they put up top 4 numbers most of the year. However, with anchor Albert Haynesworth hurting, it is definitely not the same defense that has quietly been one of the best all year. While Coach Jeff Fisher is heads and above SD Coach Norv Turner, he doesn't have quite the personnel that Turner has in his weaponry.

Turner started off very shaky with SD fans, but let's be honest--outside of the Patriots, this is the hottest team in football. With Ladanian Tomlinson once again taking the NFL rushing title and finishing 5th in the league in points, they re-established themselves over the second half of the year to be a force again in the NFL. If the Chargers give the LT often as they should, they will win this going away.

The biggest X factor in this game is going to be Vince Young versus the San Diego defense. If he can suddenly turn it on and show those flashes of brilliance we saw last year, this could be a much closer game than anticipated. The Charger defense has been pretty average, and being ranked 16th in yards rushing doesn't bode well when facing a mobile QB.

However, I still can't find it in my heart to call an upset. I still think that this game is over by half--I'll take the Chargers 35-17.
