Super Bowl XLIII: Kurt Warner's Contract Poker

The Super Bowl may be the biggest betting day of the year, but Kurt Warner's bet was made early in the season. In the final year of his contract, Kurt Warner rebuffed any ideas of signing an in-season extension, content to 'let it ride' in 2009 and let the chips fall where they may in the off-season.

"My view with players is always that once you get to free agency, you have earned the right to find out about yourself," Bartelstein said. "You would be silly not to have an open mind." - Kurt Warner's agent
When Bartelstein says 'have an open mind', you know he really means 'have an open wallet'. By all measures, Kurt's gamble has already paid off large. No matter the length of the new contract or the team he signs with, Kurt Warner will be paid a top-5 salary in 2010.

While Bartelstein talks about an open market, the reality is that Warner's tender age and body require a friendly climate which eliminates many eastern non-dome teams. Warner will almost assuredly sign an extension with the Cardinals, but will it come at Anquan Boldin's expense?
