Super Bowl XLII: The day is here

sbxlii.jpg

One of the biggest events in all of really--well, anything--is the Super Bowl. It draws millions upon millions of world wide viewers, and the revenue for the NFL is absolutely gargantuan. This year's game pits the "New" teams--New England and New York in a battle of epic proportions. Even though the line of the game is double digits, the best thing that can happen is to have it be close. Not for the bettors or anything along those lines, but for football in general. It would be a terrible thing to see a team like the Giants, underdogs throughout most of the year, make it this far to get blown out.

Some will say that the Patriots' dominance of this game needs to be convincing to place them amongst one of the best of all time, if not THE best. I say that's a wrong attitude--because there is a big problem in having it so that one team or even dynasties exist, because for the rest of the league and the fans, it becomes frustrating to see the same team win every year. The Pats are definitely the team of the 2000s, and while they could put the crowning moment through tonight's game, don't forget what teams like the Yankees and Red Sox have done for baseball--there is such a widening gap of teams that are basically never going to be near the top because of the difference in revenue spending, etc., and even with salary cap limitations in other sports, there's so many loopholes and under the table deals that is it really all that effective?

Nope.

So, that rant being all over the place, watch this game not only for the ads, but watch it to see what kind of long-term impact it will have on the NFL. If the Giants win, it's the David versus Goliath that will propel the league even higher; if they play it close but still lose, the Patriots will have made history, and the league saves face for have a much-hyped game live up to its expectations. But if the Patriots dominate and win by more than 20, my feeling is that there will be some trickle-down effect with viewership and league sales over the next couple of years.

Mark my words.
