Star Readers sound off about NFL in Toronto

logo_torontostar.gif

The Toronto Star opened up commentary to readers about the NFL's decision to bring a Buffalo Bills game to Toronto next year. While Paul Godfrey, owner of the Blue Jays and the head of a contingent group trying to bring an NFL team to Toronto, has really pushed and promoted for the "benefit of the country", many Canadians are in fact offended that the NFL will step foot on Canadian soil.

I can feel for these fans--because having a football league of their own, the CFL--with its own differences in rules and type of game--suits many of these fans just fine. The idea that the NFL is coming in just for a game right now with the idea that Godfrey's group will be consistently pushing the bid for a team, it will really change the face of football in Canada--and not necessarily for the better.

I see no issue in HAVING a game there (much like they do in Japan and Europe for exhibitions), but where there's an uncertain cloud hanging over where a team and therefore a league may be forever changed, I can't support at least the open discussion about a bid. It's not fair to the talented athletes of the CFL to have to worry about eventually losing their jobs or for the fans to have to bear down and therefore make even the game that is just being played by the Bills be done with a political undertone as to the future of the CFL and not fair to the Bills as well.

Let it go, Godfrey. At least let the game or years of games be played, see the reaction, and then discuss a bid. Honor your compatriots.
