Slim Chance: Troy Hambrick

troy_hambrickSlim Chance: Troy Hambrick

It wasn't that long ago when many believed Hambrick had the goods to be feature back material:

The Cowboys believe they may have stolen a gem by signing the 6'0" 255 pound Hambrick as an undrafted free agent in 2000. He has seen plenty of action in his two years as a backup and is thought to be the feature back of the future in Dallas. - circa. June 2002

When Parcells came to Cowtown and immediately started bickering with Hambrick over his weight and work ethic a year ago, nobody was too sure if Parcells was just being Parcells or was he genuinely miffed by Hambrick's approach to the game? Fast-forward to this year - new city, new team, new coach, but it's the same Troy Hambrick.
After missing mini-camp practices Tuesday for personal reasons, Hambrick reported Wednesday in less than ideal shape -- which Coach Norv Turner noted. "He's got a month before we go to camp, and it's something we're going to emphasize to him, that he needs to have a great month to come back," Turner said. - Mercury News: June 2004
Hambrick responds to Turner's comments;
Football is my job, and my body is my temple. I've just had a lot going on with my kids. Being a father and trying to be a professional, it gets hard sometimes. I'll be back. I'll get out and run now if he wants me to. I won't die on him. We can all look around and say, 'I would like to see this better and that better about this guy.' It's still the off-season. I still have the month of July, and I like to be a last-minute guy, anyway. - Mercury News: June 2004

Remember folks, Parcells thought so much of Hambrick's ability that he enticed Adrian Murrell to come out of a 3-year football hibernation and suit up for the Cowboys. With Wheatley, Zereoue, Fargas and Crockett on the Raiders roster at least Turner won't find himself dialing up Napoleon Kaufman anytime soon.
