Roger Goodell has the Hammer

FEAR THIS MAN!!!!

The big story this NFL off season (beyond the ridiculous amount of guaranteed money being thrown around) is new NFL Commish Roger Goodell looking to bring the hammer down on certain idiots who can't stay out of jail in their off time (Pac Man Jones, the Cincinnati Bengals). Well according to this story in the Washington Post, Goodell is pretty serious about cleaning things up.

"NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told representatives of the players' association yesterday that he is leaving open the possibility that the new player conduct policy will include a provision allowing him to ban for life a player involved in serious criminal incidents."

Damn, this dude isn't messing around. Now I don't know what "serious criminal incident" would warrant a lifetime ban, but the fact that it's on the table now should have players looking to straighten up. Goodell said that this isn't any sort of "three strikes" policy where a player could face a ban after a specific number of incidents, but I'm sure if a player continually finds himself on the wrong side of the law (Pac Man) he could soon find his way out of the league.

Goodell did say that he's not considering a lifetime ban for either of the players he met with yesterday (Pac Man Jones and Chris Henry) but did say that he would render his decision on those two gentleman in the next few days. Expect a season suspension for Jones and probably between 4-8 games for Henry. I can't say I'd have a problem with either of those suspensions, as both guys have been habitual idiots over the past year and it's getting to be a bit much.

I also have to say that I like the message Goodell is sending here. Either get your act together or I'm giving you a one way ticket to the Arena League, and the paychecks there don't exactly pay for Bentley's and $81,000 in one dollar bills to "make it rain," at some night club. It's a great policy that will help clean up the league a bit. While there will always be some idiots who can't seem to stay out of trouble, at least they may think twice now knowing that their livelihood can be taken away.

Now if only Goodell could put a ban on the Mannings doing anymore commercials, then we'd be getting somewhere.

Guess Roger's code of conduct doesn't apply to Vince Woolfolk and his fingers going into the eyes of Brandon Jacobs
