Priest Holmes retires: What next for Chiefs?

Poor Herm Edwards. The guy just can't catch a break. From the disappointing season of Larry Johnson to the ineffective play of Damon Huard, the Chiefs are a shell of what they used to be offensively. They got a shot in the arm, or at least a band-aid, when Priest Holmes came back and even started the last two games while LJ was hurt (again).

Unfortunately, the band-aid is ready to be thrown away. Ok, maybe that's a little understating for a guy like Holmes, who retired from football due to his possible prognosis of paralysis if he continued to play. This is a figure who basically dominated fantasy football for almost three years, all RBs bowing down to his gaudy numbers. But then--just like that--injuries came on in a furor, and Holmes was done when Johnson was drafted and eased into the starting role. But he did help his team significantly, even if he wasn't the superstar that he used to be.

Now, the large bulk of the carries will go to Kolby Smith. He had a terrible preseason, and as soon as the team signed Holmes, Smith was an afterthought. He does have a great opportunity though--the Chiefs have a remaining schedule against the likes of run-allergic teams Oakland, San Diego, Denver, Tennessee, Detroit, and the Jets. Smith gets four of the worst rush defenses in the league in six games if he remains the starter. So, if he's not snatched up, I would certainly get him.
