Pierce fined for animal neglect

pierce.jpg

If there's one thing that the NFL didn't need, it was another player that had an issue with animals in terms of abuse and neglect. The Michael Vick case basically had done a ton of damage to the league's image--it was already bad enough that the majority of the public and fans even think that for the most part, off the field, the athletes are immature and undisciplined, but Vick's case brought into the savage "thug" imagery that the NFL just didn't need or want.

And now, they have another player that has indeed joined that nastiness. Antonio Pierce, a middle linebacker for the world champion New York Giants, had to pay a 1300 dollar fine in New Jersey for animal neglect. Evidently, the short of it was that he had pet pit bulls that were found severely malnourished and running amuck. To boot, they didn't get them taken care of with shots, etc., and one was suffering from a severe respiratory illness.

The NFL can't be happy, and hopefully the Giants and the league will either suspend or give Pierce a hefty fine--they cannot let this pass because it wasn't as "big" or involved a lower profile player. They certainly have to make a bold statement that issues like this will not be ignored; I realize this should be across the baord with DUIs, battery, etc., but this is a hot topic still in everyone's minds and it needs to be addressed.
