Patriots best team of all time? Nope

Yeah, yeah, they have a chance to go 19-0 for the first time ever, yadda yadda yadda. Yes, they beat up on teams early like they were playing against St. Mary's School for the Blind. But are the Patriots the best team in NFL history?

Nope.

I have two teams to lay at your feet to chew on (well I guess that analogy doesn't make sense), and one of them is the 1985 Chicago Bears. On the offensive side, they didn't have a ton of all-star talent other than Walter Payton. Sure, Willie Gault and Jim McMahon provided theatrics, but the real story of this team was its defense, which kicked the living snot out of teams and confused even the best QBs they played against. While some will argue that the Super Bowl Ravens team boasted the best defense ever, I think you'd be hard pressed to really see past this Bears team that finished 15-1 in the regular season, only losing at Miami.

I'd also throw at you the 1984 San Francisco 49ers. Bill Walsh's team not only had Joe Montana and a budding Roger Craig, but their defense was equally as awesome, outscoring their opponents by a whopping 248 points. The scary thing was that they didn't even have Jerry Rice yet...WOW. They beat up on some pretty great teams that year, and they too went 15-1.

I realize that going undefeated is an amazing feat, especially in today's parity laden world of football. However, while I will argue up and down that the New England offense is the best of all time, I won't say that they are the best team ever--because I just don't think that with their defense they really have done much more than not let the other team score as much...and that's been about it. The margins of victory started out absolutely canyon-like, but the second half of the year, this team really eeked by with several victories that their offense had to bail their mediocre defense out of--in my opinion.
