NFL opener may move to appease GOP

GOP-Elephant.jpg

The NFL Opener is scheduled for Thursday, September 4th, and we know that the World Champion New York Giants will be involved. What we don't know is what time the game will be. The time slot normally associated with Thursday Night Football is 8:30 PM Eastern, but NBC officials have been approached by those within the Republican party to change it because is coincides with the wrap-up night of the Republican National Convention. The new time would be 7:00 PM.

The convention, which already has a clear-cut winner in John McClain, will be held in Minneapolis, but the last night is of course the launching pad for the final stretch of the presidential elections in November. The starting time of the game will be discussed at the league meeting in Florida next week, along with other "hot" items.

Is this a ratings thing or is it a political thing? It may be a little bit of both, but how fair is that to the West Coast contingent? That means that football fans who are wanting to watch it there may not even be out of work, considering that it is 4:00 there when it will start. Also, if they allow this to happen, won't the Democratic Party cry foul for the "preferential" treatment that is occurring? The NFL has a contract with NBC, and the assumption is that they want to maximize the ratings, but something tells me the GOP will win out, and football fans will have to deal with this no matter what. Lovely.
