NFL Draft Preview: San Francisco 49ers

San-Francisco-49ers-Logo.gif

This draft is uber-critical for coach Mike Nolan. Why? If he doesn't start getting some W's, he will be certainly gone, and Mike Martz may be going along with him. After finishing 5-11 in yet another disappointing season, the Niners have several things they need to do, but one of the things that I think they needed to make changes for--Quarterback--evidently is not a concern with them.

The Niners don't have a pick until number 29, which unfortunately puts even more pressure on getting a high quality "diamond in the rough". Position-wise, San Fran should look at getting a wide receiver that Alex Smith can throw to; Darrell Jackson is past his prime and while the team got Isaac Bruce and Bryant Johnson in the offseason, it's time to draft someone to play this year in lieu of these moves. The offensive line needs a lot of help as well, with very little depth and with quarterbacks that already aren't exactly great, this is a recipe for disaster if they don't get some protection quick.

There will still be more receiver depth at the 29th pick probably more than anything else; many of the high quality lineman will be snapped up unless the Niners can get Gosder Cherilus. I can see them getting Desean Jackson, a local "Cal" boy. This would be a decent move overall. For Nolan's sake, it better be better than decent....
