NFL Draft Preview: San Diego Chargers

The Chargers keep on keepin' on, and after a season where it began quite shaky for Norv Turner's team (possibly because of him), San Diego quickly regained their elite form and even dispatched the then-world champs Indianapolis Colts in the playoffs before succumbing to the New England Patriots. While the team seems to always plug the holes that have opened from year to year, this year presents a little bit of more interesting possibilities than normal.

Why? Because the offensive lines and defensive lines could use some upgrades, but aren't exactly areas of panic. If there is one that could use some help more than the other, it's on the offensive line--specifically at tackle. Jeromey Clary may jump up to be a starter but he has little experience. On the defensive line, they just need simply more depth for injury issues. Another position that could use some assistance is safety as far as depth.

Because the Chargers don't have many glaring issues (most teams would LOVE to have this problem), it does leave them in a good position despite drafting 27th overall. If Gosder Cherilus falls for any reason, San Diego will surely get him, but if he's gone, the pop pick has been Brandon Flowers from Virginia Tech as a corner. He certainly can give them better options in the secondary, that is for sure. If I had to choose though, I'd go with Kenny Phillips, a hard-hitting safety from Miami, to really assist with that safety position issue.
