NFL Draft Preview: New York Giants

nygiants.gif

The New York Giants. Oh, excuse me...the WORLD CHAMPION New York Giants. I still can't believe that statement and it's been darn near three months since the Super Bowl, but it is still hard to fathom that the huge underdog Giants beat the Patriots. Anyways, since New York is so much a "what have you done for me lately" town, just because the Giants won the Super Bowl doesn't mean that they are going to let off anything in the draft. So, what do they need?

The offense looks pretty good overall unless the rumor mill about trading Jeremy Shockey is going to actually happen, which I really don't think is going to happen. That being said, the Giants really need to concentrate on upgrading their defense, specifically Safety, Cornerback, and linebacker. At OLB, the Giants are facing a near-desperate situation after 2 starters bolted and Mathias Kiwanuka's effectiveness is still in question after being hurt. At safety, it seemed like almost a "well, ok, we'll take him" approach when they signed Sammy Knight. He is not the answer they need.

That being said, several draft boards have the Giants, as the last pick in the first round, taking Kenny Phillips from Miami, and I think that is a smart move. If Jerod Mayo slips or the Giants feel like the blue-collar work ethic of Dan Connor would suit them better, you may see them taking a linebacker at this position as well.
