NFL Draft Preview: Levi Brown

Joe.jpg

Joe Paterno wants those damn kids off his lawn, and he wants you to draft Levi Brown.

Back to some NFL draft previews, and we go back to the offensive line for this one. While Joe Thomas has been soaking in all the Big Ten lineman hype, there is another who could go in the top ten, and is probably the second best lineman in this draft. Plus he may have been named after a brand of jeans.

Name: Levi Brown

Position: Offensive Tackle

School: Penn State

Pros: Enormous man with the quick feet of a ballerina. Expert in standing in front of people and impeding their progress (his family says he makes a "better door than a window"). Cool first name makes me think of Levi Jones and he's pretty good.

Cons: For a big guy, he's kinda fragile. Sometimes gets bored and doesn't maintain his blocks. May have short arms.

Completely Unbiased Synopsis: Levi is being overshadowed by Joe Thomas (and for good reason), but he could turn out to be as good or even better than him. He has good size for an offensive tackle, and has the quick feet necessary to deal with NFL defensive ends. He has shown the ability to block for both the run, and the pass at Penn State so the team that drafts him doesn't have to worry about him in either area. There are a couple of knocks on him though and one is durability. He had trouble staying healthy at Penn State and some wonder whether or not that problem will follow him into the pros. He also has shown at times that he gives up on blocks and let's guys through from time to time. In the game against Michigan, he was beat a few times by quick defensive ends coming around the outside, this could be a problem in the pros. Also needs to work on his arm work when blocking. It wasn't a huge problem in college, but if he doesn't get that corrected in the pros he'll get beat a lot, or be called for a bunch of holding penalties.

Where He's Headed: I'm pretty sure Levi is headed to Miami at the number nine spot. There's no way Thomas is around by then, and the Dolphins could use a good offensive tackle prospect. If he does happen to fall (which I really don't think he will) he could become a Houston Texan at the number ten spot, since their offensive line is notoriously horrible.

BOLD PREDICTION: Levi will be a servicable offensive tackle. I don't think he's going to be a super all-pro Walter Jones type tackle, but I think he'll be pretty good.
