NFL Draft Preview: LaRon Landry

ncf_a_miles_195.jpg

Les Miles is fired up about LaRon Landry. FEAR THE GIGANTIC HAT!

Today we move into the defensive secondary for the first time with probably the best defensive back in the draft. History has shown that drafting a defensive back in the top ten is a rather sketchy proposition (*cough*PAC MAN*cough*) but this fine young gentleman is looking to prove that he's worth that high pick....

Name: LaRon Landry

Position: Safety

School: LSU

Pros: Absolute ball hawk, in that he may possess the ability to fly and make killer death swoops to intercept the ball or wide receivers. Started for four years (and at LSU that's saying something). Cool alliterative name. Sounds like a badass.

Cons: "Lacks ideal bulk," but that's not something a quick trip to Shawne Merriman's supplement shop won't fix

Completely Unbiased Synopsis: LaRon started for four years at LSU. Let me say that again. He started for FOUR YEARS at LSU. He played a significant role as a freshman on a team that won half of the Mythical National Championship, and he's only gotten better. He played in the SEC with all that OMG SPEED~! and thrived against the difficult competition. Ideal free safety for the NFL as he has the speed to play center field in zone coverage and the ability to recognize offensive sets and make the right reads. Some say he's not really big enough yet for the position, but if the only negative you can find is that he's a little undersized I'm sure he'll be just fine. Sometimes is a little risky and doesn't make the right move on a ball in the air, but the same can be said for most free safeties. Put him in a defense with a good strong safety who can help with the run and you're looking at a guy who can make some Pro Bowls.

Where He's Headed: Unfortunately for LaRon, right now I see him going to the waste land that is Minnesota. The good news about this scenario is at least he's already used to wearing purple. The Vikings could go a couple of ways with their pick at the number seven spot, but Landry is probably the best choice. If the Vikings pass, then look for the Texans who are sitting at ten to snatch him up. If neither of those two teams want him then I'm sure someone will trade up to snag him before the top ten is over.

BOLD PREDICTION: LaRon goes to Minnesota and torments me for years as he is a constant all-pro for the Vikings. Hopefully he doesn't talk to Fred Smoot about "things to do during a bye week."
