NFL Draft Preview: Jacksonville Jaguars

jaguarslogo.jpg

Jacksonville had a dream last year--upend the big bad Colts and their stranglehold on the AFC South. With star-in-the-making David Garrard and a big time high energy offense with Maurice Jones-Drew, the Jags aimed high. And while they didn't quite get the job done in the AFC South, they did however turn many heads with their late season run and beating Pittsburgh at Heinz Field in the playoffs before succumbing to the Patriots.

So, that being said, the big focus for the Jaguars is going to be revolving around one word: defense. The defense needs to have two big things--pass rush and ability to stop the run. At defensive tackle, John Henderson is formidable, but that's about it. The depth is nil and they really need to shore that area up along with the pass rush positions, because Reggie Hayward will more than likely not be as effective as in previous seasons. The Jags could also use some depth in the secondary so that's always an option.

With the 26th pick of the draft, the Jags will probably go after a pass rusher first go around, and with fellow USC alum Jack Del Rio at the helm, I would not be surprised if they go out and get Lawrence Jackson, a fierce DE from--USC. Kentwan Balmer may be a possibility at DT if they decide to go that route, but if they don't get a pass rusher in the first round, bet that they will by the end of round 2.
