NFL Draft Preview: Indianapolis Colts

Indianapolis-Colts-Poster-C10073333.jpeg

The Indianapolis Colts, by their standards, had a sub-par 2007. As the defending world champions, the team had not lost much and looked to improve even more so. However, injuries depleted both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, which exposed some depth problems the Colts had, and with the year the New England Patriots had, Indy unfortunately got hit with looking ahead when they got beat at home in their last game at the RCA dome ever. So, how do they avoid that next year in terms of personnel?

At defensive end, the Colts found out that life without Dwight Freeney is might painful. Even though the defense had a great overall year, the pass rush was less to be desired, and even with Freeney healthy, the Colts need to add more depth here as well. The same can be said for the linebacking position, because even though Gary Brackett is tough all the way around, the Colts can't count on another Freddy Keiaho to suddenly spring up and do well. The line also was very much depleted after Jake Scott left town, and they have to protect their prized commodity--Peyton Manning--so the Colts will more than likely look to the deep offensive linemen corps this year.

The Colts don't draft until 59th this year, so they will sure to be sighing as big name after big name gets taken off the board, and I have been a little surprised to see that some people are picking the Colts to get a running back to back up Joseph Addai. Huh? No way. If anything, they need to go after the offensive lineman--either that or trade up to get a good solid defensive front man. If they go after the running back, it's clearly because Tony Dungy is willing to gamble on the injury bug not hitting two years in a row--but with this aging crew, that's a huge gamble.
