NFL Draft Preview: Green Bay Packers

packers345.gif

Ahhh...life after Brett Favre. The nightmare that all Green Bay fans knew would be coming soon but never wanted to face. The icon that was Green Bay Packer football is now gone, and so the Aaron Rodgers era begins. One would think that this would mean that the "sky" is falling, and so the first thought would be that they need a QB, right? Not so fast, my friend.

First, at offensive tackle, the Packers are getting old--so they need some young blood in there to protect Rodgers. And while the Pack attack has invested several picks in the past on safeties, but nothing has really panned out, so there needs to be something yet again coming back at this position. I would also think that they may want to look for a receiver to help Rodgers as well--the idea is that Favre made a lot of decent receivers great, and there may be a need for some great receivers to make Rodgers better as well.

The Packers are essentially the last pick of the first round since New England forfeited their pick, and based on these things above, I would say that if Gosder Cherilus is around, it's a no-brainer. If not, they may look at Desean Jackson or Limas Sweed, both receivers. Either way, it's time to build an offense for a new era, and if the Pack wants to be immediately successful, it's going to be by surrounding Rodgers with good talent, and not so much expecting him to be like old number 4.
