NFL Draft Preview: Gaines Adams

31_happy-fan.gif

This Clemson fan is really excited about Gaines Adams. Either that or some crap bowl his team just went to.

We're keeping things on the defensive line again today, with probably the best defensive prospect in the draft this year. He comes from that great football school of...Clemson? Really? Huh.

Name: Gaines Adams

Position: Defensive End

School: Clemson (really? are you sure?)

Pros: EXPLODES (not literally) off the ball with great quickness. Fast for a rather large fellow. Good at both pass rushing, and run stopping.

Cons: Kind of small for a defensive end. May need some more strength to bang with NFL offensive lineman. Played for a team that wears orange....AND PURPLE.

Completely Unbiased Synopsis: Gaines is this year's Mario Williams, in that he's a player from a marginal ACC school who is shooting up the draft board. Gaines, however, will not have the benefit of the dumbass Texans drafting first and will not go quite as high as "Super" Mario, but he has similar NFL prospects. He's quick and is good at getting upfield, which is good in pass rushing and run stopping situations, though at times he tends to overpursue which isn't good against some NFL rush offenses. He's a little on the small side, but they said the same thing about Dwight Freeney and he's kinda good. He may be used as a situational pass rusher his first year or so (think Terrell Suggs) before becoming an every down lineman, but that will probably depend on the talent already on the team that drafts him. If he puts a little more bulk on his frame, while keeping his top end speed and quick burst, he could be a very good player in the NFL.

Where He's Headed: The Lions are apparently hot for Gaines, but I really don't see them making a move for him as high as number two. I could, however, see the Lions trading down to four or five and taking him there. If he doesn't go to Detroit then I see him going to Washington who's sitting at number six and could use some defensive line help. If he continues to fall (he won't) I'm sure the 49ers would snatch him up at number eleven, but I really don't see that happening.

BOLD PREDICTION: I see Gaines going to the Redskins and becoming a decent NFL pro. I don't really see him dominating the league, but he'll be a good pass rushing defensive end for years to come.
