NFL Draft Preview: Dwayne Jarrett

An NFL scout assesses Dwayne Jarrett at the USC pro day.

Let's move back over to the offensive side of the ball and take at look at some of the receivers who pale in comparison to the wonder that is The Uber-freak (tm) Calvin Johnson. First we'll take a look at a receiver who probably thinks he's just as good as Calvin, and will probably tell you if you asked him, too bad he's a bit slow

Name: Dwayne Jarrett

Position: Wide Receiver

School: USC

Pros: Great hands that are very soft from the time he spends messaging his ego. Tall with good upper body strength as well.

Cons: SLOW! Could be out of shape. Bad attitude stemming from being an arrogant prick.

Completely Unbiased Synopsis: Disclaimer, I don't like Dwayne Jarrett. I think he's an arrogant prick. He's like the anti-Calvin Johnson, and I mean that in personality and overall talent. He didn't run at the combine because he was too good to run that day (unlike Calvin Johnson) and then turned in a horrible 4.62 at USC's pro day. Let me put that into proper perspective for you. Former USC standout/future NFL bust Mike Williams ran a 4.56 and is considered big and slow in the NFL. Greg Olsen from Miami ran a 4.45, and he's a TIGHT END. Because he's not exceptionally fast, Dwayne may run into trouble in the NFL. He won't be able to break away from the incredibly fast corners, and therefore will struggle to get open and will have to go across the middle a lot, which usually doesn't mean a lot of yards and a healthy career path. His speed will also prevent him from being a deep threat in the NFL. On the positive side of things he does have very good hands, and his ability to catch in traffic will help him in the NFL. He's a big receiver who has shown the ability to take a hit, and is tall enough to out jump smaller corners on fade routes in the end zone. He could be a very good red zone receiver, but I really don't see him being a number one receiver in the NFL.

Where He's Headed: After that 40 time at the USC Pro Day Dwayne could see himself slip all the way out of the first round. The good news for Dwayne is that Jerry Rice posted the same 40 times when he was coming out of college. The bad news? That was 23 years ago and the NFL has gotten a bit faster since then. So where does he go? Well I could see him going to the Chiefs at 23 or possibly the Bears at 31 if he were to go in the first round. If not those two then I think he'll be in Silver and Black at the top of the second round, provided they don't pull a swerve and take Calvin Johnson first. I will say I can't say I'm sad about Dwayne falling down the draft board. Couldn't have happened to a better guy.

BOLD PREDICTION: Dwayne will be a decent possession receiver in the NFL. In certain systems he could be well utilized and won't need to be the deep threat he probably can't be. I think he'll have a pretty good career, but don't think he's going to be a star receiver by any means, but I could always be wrong.
