NFL Draft Preview: Detroit Lions

detroit_lions_logo.jpg

Note to Detroit: Don't draft a wide receiver. Do you hear me? DON'T DRAFT A RECEIVER. Good grief, it seems like this is where players who have numbers in the 80's go to die after draft day. That being said, the Lions certainly showed some signs of life last year and certainly have a better outlook than most years heading into draft day.

Where they really need assistance is at running back. Kevin Jones never panned out and is gone; however, they really have nothing in his place. Getting someone like Rashard Mendenhall, as a million mock drafts have stated, is probably their best move. But they could also go after an offensive tackle, where the situation is just about as desolate, even to the point where a natural center/tackle was put in at the position. If Jeff Otah is available, this would be a great pick.

Lastly, the Lions could use some help at linebacker, and some drafts are saying that because Rod Marinelli demands speed, the Lions may go after arguably the best linebacker available in the draft, Jerod Mayo from Tennessee. If they end up going this way, I would think that the Lions may make some draft-day deals to end up with an RB or OT sometime to offset these huge needs.
