NFL Draft Preview: Denver Broncos

denver_broncos_logo.jpg

The Broncos have been somewhat of a mystery team over the past couple of years, and for good reason--for what seemed like the majority of the 90s and early 2000s, you had a team that was dominant in so many ways--every year it seemed like they were putting up gaudy offensive numbers and making it to playoffs virtually at will. But then--even though they have had the same coach--the team has faded from power, and while they've been competitive, they are a shell of their former selves. Failed attempts at free agents and draft choices that haven't yet paid off dividends seem to have weighed down the team, so what now?

The biggest concern for the Broncos is down in the trenches, both on the offensive and defensive lines. Matt Lepsis suddenly retired, and while Ryan Harris is decent--he's not a sure thing to be nearly as solid as Lepsis was. On the defensive side, Sam Adams was just a huge flop: Denver has got to get some defensive line help now. Likewise, in the secondary, the Broncs need to get some depth at safety and maybe even at the corners.

Denver has the 12th pick, and the depth of offensive linemen is actually pretty good this year in the draft, so while Jake Long will be long gone (no pun intended) by the time Denver is on the clock, there will be good options available--from Ryan Clady to Branden Albert to Jeff Otah. I personally think Otah has more of a success possibility, but most depth charts have Clady leading the way. Either way, making these changes will help continue to rebuild--not make them back to a power team--but certainly help them back towards that status.
