NFL Draft Preview: Dallas Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys.gif

The Dallas Cowboys. You either love them or you hate them, there really is no in between. But even if you despise the 'Boys, you have to have somewhere in your heart where you've felt a little bad for Tony Romo and crew over the past couple of years; both years, Dallas has looked very good in the regular season, only to forget everything come playoff time and have early exits. We all know owner Jerry Jones does not take anything but championships as good news, so he's sure to shore up some needs come draft day.

One of the biggest needs of the Cowboys was met just a couple of days ago when they traded to get Pacman Jones. All I have to say is this: Pacman and T.O. are on the same team. Be prepared to set up an emergency bail fund, Mr. Jones. Other than that, the Cowboys need to focus on two skill positions, wide receiver and running back. I don't think really anyone had an idea that Julius Jones was going to bolt the big D, but it happened. Yes, they still have Marion Barber, but he really is not effective as an every-down back. Likewise, at receiver, Dallas needs someone to help T.O. immensely. Yes, I know, Patrick Crayton is anything but chopped liver, but can they really count on Owens always being Superman? I am actually quite surprised that the 'Boys didn't make a serious attempt to get Chad Johnson. Good lord, with those three on the team, would anyone else EVER get any press time?

So, onto the draft. With the need at running back being the most pressing, the Cowboys don't really have an enviable position in the first round (28th), but they will probably use this pick on either Jonathan Stewart or Felix Jones. I personally like Stewart a lot and think he is underrated, while I think Jones is very much overrated. It will be interesting to see who they end up with, but it will more than likely be some one in the back field.

You said the Boys do not have an enviable position in the first round (28th). They are the only team with 2 first round pics which will be great trade bait. Also the addition of pacman is not the end of the cornerback position. Even Jerry Jones said you need to be at-least three deep and with Anthony Henry's injury and age he is still a little bit of a question mark. SO, that being said I think we take RB at 22 and CB at 28 and worry about WR in the second round. Provided we dont trade around for possibly a veteran WR to add the "WOW Factor" Jerry has been talking about.

Hey Chris, thanks for reading. You know what? My bad on missing the whole 22nd pick, I totally missed that little, minute detail. :)))

Anyways, you make a good point about CB. Perhaps Mike Jenkins? Aqib Talib? Maybe even Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie? One of those three should be around at 22, so you are probably right about the CB position and maybe they can then wait until 28 for the RB. Either way, they should get someone that can hopefully step right in.

Well, it looks like I was right! KINDA!

We rook RB (Felix Jones) at 22 and (Tim called this one) Mike Jenkins at 25 (moved up from 28 so Houston would not take him). The kinda part is that we took ZERO, NADA, NO, NONE, ZILCH WR's in the draft! I was shocked, but now it looks like we are picking up WR's in the free agency market. Jerry believe that we have what we need at WR in 2008, but also understands we need to start preparing for 2009, 10, 11... by getting younger at that position.

    Overall, I give our draft a B+...
I like the addition of Felix Jones to compliment Barber.
I LOVE the addition of Mike Jenkins, he will add to the secondary RIGHT AWAY!
Not an A in the draft because I think we should have picked up a WR. There was not ONE WR picked by ANY team in the first round, by the time we got to the second round we could have moved up a little and had our pick of WR.

However, the WR corp in this years draft was lacking a little bit, I think next year we look at WR in the first round.

Hey Chris, thanks for checking back in--I agree with your consensus, I was actually really surprised by the entire NFL's drop in confidence for the WR position--no, it wasn't deep, but Devin Thomas dropping to the second round? I was really surprised how far Limas Sweed dropped--seriously. But for the Cowboys, they may have that little "oomph" to get them to the next level that fans probably think they should have been at all along :) I guess, like everything else, it will be a wait and see thing....but I have a feeling that Dallas will reap lots of benefits from Jones and Jenkins, that is for sure!
