NFL Draft Preview: Cincinnati Bengals

logo2_800.jpg

Ah, the Bungles. The Ben--gals. The bungholes. You name the funny slang name for the Bengals, it's been said. The team is definitely out of the shadow of their formerly embarrassing selves on the field, it's off the field that has been the problem, what with arrests and arguing through the media (Chad Johnson). Still, the team overall has been pretty solid in terms of the Wins-Losses, even though it seems they just can't get over that proverbial hump into the elite.

So what do they need? Defense, defense, and more defense. The interior defense is pretty scary--not scary in terms of what offenses have seen, but to fans of Cincinnati--it's been a nightmare. First of all, I have to point out that the linebacking core is inefficient AND they have people that are probably going to be gone pretty soon from the team anyways. Down in the trenches, Bryan Robinson and John Thornton are like 400 years old, so it may be time to look for some decent defensive tackles. They needed some help in the tight end department before they signed Ben Utecht, who should fill in nicely, so the Bengals may just want to draft for D this year.

The Bengals draft ninth, and if they have the opportunity, they will probably have a chance at Sedrick Ellis from USC, who can provide immediate results. If Glenn Dorsey slips, you better bet they'll grab him, although I am still a little leery of his mysterious injuries at LSU. In the second round, the Bengals will have to get a linebacker, and more than likely, Cincinnati will be able to choose from Curtis Lofton or Dan Connor. Either one will fill in nicely.
