NFL Draft Preview: Chicago Bears

chicago-bears-logo.gif

So, is it any secret as to what the Chicago Bears are going to go after this year? One word: offense. No, they don't need anything on defense--they are still like the Monsters of the Midway, but the offense has been scarier than the defense for quite some time. Even in their Super Bowl year, Rex Grossman took nothing but flack up, until and even after the big game. A year removed, they still are looking for more firepower than ever, so here we are, a new draft to be able to build that spark.

Quarterback has got to be a focus at some point in the draft. While they may not go after someone in the first round, actually at their draft position--14th--getting Brian Brohm would not be a terrible move--but their is a good crop of offensive linemen in this draft, and the Bears have got to get a tackle or a guard. It's why a lot of people are prognosticating either Jeff Otah from Pitt or Ryan Clady from Boise St. Either one would be a good selection and provide better protection for their usually scrambling QBs.

While these would be decent ideas, don't be surprsed if the Bears go after Rashard Mendenhall, a running back from the Big Ten. While the Bears need a running back--Cedric Benson is just not the answer--getting one in the first round would not be smart, but the Bears haven't exactly been smart in drafting--especially running backs, and with offensive coordinator Ron Turner actually being the coach that recruited Mendenhall to Illinois, it could happen.
