NFL Draft Preview: Carolina Panthers

carolinapantherslogo.gif

Ouch. That was the theme for the Carolina Panthers for the 2007 season. Jake Delhomme's injury really set things in motion for a very disappointing year, as David Carr flopped terribly and it even forced the Panthers to take Vinny Testaverde out of retirement. And while he didn't do terribly, the whole offense suffered, as Steve Smith, while he barely eclipsed 1000 yards, had the lowest amount of TDs since 2003.

Obviously, Carolina should be thinking seriously about quarterback options. The thing is, they draft 13th, so the likelihood that Matt Ryan will be available is not good, and the difference between Ryan and 2nd-best QB Brian Brohm means that drafting him would be premature. So, the next place to look for the Panthers is on the defensive line. They are getting old and have been a non-factor for quite some time, and if they are serious about this, they will probably have to trade up to get speedy DE Derrick Harvey from Florida.

Other than that, other questionable areas in terms of depth are at offensive tackle and safety. If they can cover these positions over the gamut of the draft, there could be joy in Charlotte--but the question is, when will they go after a QB? I mean, Colt Brennan, to me, is underrated, and even Andre Woodson may be an option, but the reality is, they've got to get out of draft weekend with something to show for it.
