NFL Draft Preview: Calvin Johnson

flash.bmp

Calvin Johnson could be just as fast as the Flash, and he's tall with great hands too.

I don't know about you but yesterday's look at Joe Thomas got me yawning. Offensive lineman? BORING! Let's get back to the flashy players with quite possibly the best player in this draft. He's an absolute freak who's ready to start torching NFL corners, and he also gives a damn about your impoverished nation. He's Georgia Tech's own....Calvin Johnson.

Name: Calvin Johnson

Position: Wide Receiver

School: Georgia Tech

Pros: Fast enough to turn back time by spinning Earth backwards. Great hands honed by catching extremely horrible passes from Reggie Ball. Cares about the drinking water in your impoverished country.

Cons: Maybe too used to catching balls thrown at feet, won't know what to do with accurate passer. Not a prick, which apparently means he can't be a great receiver.

Completely Unbiased Synopsis: This kid is a stud. There's really no other way to say it. He has blazing speed, as he demonstrated at the combine by running a 4.3...IN SOMEONE ELSE'S SHOES! He's tall, he's big, and if you get the ball near him he'll catch it. I think in some ways he's an even better receiver having had to put up with Reggie Ball at Georgia Tech. It's easy to catch balls thrown to you in stride that hit you right in the numbers, but it's another thing all together to catch balls throw above, behind, and below your numbers. Johnson thrived in college with a horrible QB, which is something you don't really see too often. To top it all of he actually seems like a nice human being as well. He spent his offseason last year in Africa helping to sanitize drinking water in poor countries. How can you not love this kid? I really think that teams are going to regret passing over Johnson. He's going to be something special.

Where He's Headed: If this were any normal year I would say Calvin can start fitting himself for silver and black because he fits the bill with what Al Davis loves, speed. That being said I think the Raiders are going with JaMarcus Russell so that brings us to an interesting situation at number two. Matt Millen and the Lions took wide receivers in three straight first rounds, which means that taking Johnson would be ridiculous right? Well not if Millen were actually smart. The Lions could definitely use another wide out (last year's number two receiver on the Lions was converted safety Mike Furrey) and they should probably draft Johnson here. Will they? Probably not. They'll let past mistakes dictate that they can't draft another wide receiver, and that's why the Lions will continue to suck. I could easily see some teams try and trade up to snag Johnson (Minnesota I'm looking your way) but if the draft order holds and the Lions pass on him then I see him going to Tampa Bay at number four in what could go down as the steal of this draft. No way Johnson lasts past four, no matter what happens.

BOLD PREDICTION: Calvin will be the best player to come out of this draft. He will be an all-pro receiver for years to come (provided he stays healthy) and could one day go to the Hall of Fame. Matt Millen, if you read this, PLEASE TAKE HIM!!!!!
