NFL Draft Preview: Atlanta Falcons

atlantafalconslogo.gif

There isn't a team that isn't more ready for the new season than the Atlanta Falcons. After the Michael Vick debacle, Bobby Petrino bolting, and the team just basically looking like a team without any clue or desire, it's no surprise that the draft represents so much more than what other teams can gain.

Without question, the biggest concern for the Falcons is quarterback. Both the Joey Harrington and Byron Leftwich experiments did not work out, and while surprisingly Chris Redman was actually decent, it is not the solution Atlanta is looking for. The other two areas the Falcons need to focus on are down in the trenches, on both the offensive line and defensive line, most notably the tackle positions. At O-tackle, the depth is decent, but the talent isn't, and at the D-tackle, it's going to be scarier for Atlanta than previously thought now that Trey Lewis won't be back as soon as they thought.

Although Matt Ryan will be available when it comes to the third pick in the draft for Hotlanta, the Falcons probably won't take him. New coach Mike Smith is a defense-first guy, and if Jake Long isn't picked (which is unlikely), Glenn Dorsey will be wearing Falcon black on Sundays. Dorsey has risen and fallen in the stock of the draft in what seems like a daily thing, but it seems those injury rumors have been quelled--for now. More than likely then--as they will pick again at number 33, they'll probably go after Brian Brohm, who could surprise in the NFL.
