Lions ring their own Bell

tbell.jpg

The Detroit Lions were fighting fast and furious for Julius Jones. One of the prized running backs in the free agency world this offseason, they were outmaneuvered by--of all teams--Seattle. Facing a situation that they really didn't anticipate, the Lions decided to re-sign Tatum Bell to a 1-year deal that will more than likely give him a golden shot at starting since Kevin Jones is coming off of a torn ACL.

Bell didn't get much PT last year, only starting 4 games total and having 82 carries. However, he did wonderful things when he was with Denver (what running back hasn't?), so he really does have the tools to get the job done. However, this is more than likely a make or break situation for Bell, as it is widely prognosticated that the Lions will be drafting a running back in the first round of the draft, and if they don't trade up for Darren McFadden to get the young stud, they will more than likely choose Rashard Mendenhall, the bullish runner from Illinois.

If Bell can rack up the yards like he did in Denver, they won't have to rush any rookie into playing time too early, but if he struggles off the bat, whomever gets the call on draft day, look for them to carries early on--this will be something to watch during preseason and pay close attention prior to your fantasy draft, or you could get left holding the proverbial bag with the back who is left out.
