In one of the "duh" statements of the season, the Atlanta Falcons have named Byron Leftwich their starting QB after picking up on the waiver wire a few weeks ago. It sure didn't take long for the Falcons to pull the trigger, and poor Joey Harrington is once again banished to holding a clipboard.
But what does this mean? I wrote about the signing a few weeks ago, and while Leftwich has a decent history as a QB, in fantasy terms he's lukewarm. His mobility is pitiful, and with a shoddy receiving corps, I look for Alge Crumpler to get the bulk of the looks and for their to not be much change in the end result for the team.
However, this week is a head-scratching one. If you certainly are in need of a QB and he's available, grab him. If you're hem-hawing between a low end QB2, this week may not be a bad pickup anyways because he plays the ridiculously awful secondary from New Orleans. Leftwich has always had a cannon, and this match up is HUGE for those who own him.
Overall, though, I can't be really excited until I see him in action and see how the Falcons gel overall with him at the helm. I hate to be cynical, but basically that means that I won't be jumping on anyone to take him for the long haul.
