Jerome Harrison's Time Is Coming

jerome_harrison.jpgRomeo Crennel is no Bill Belichick, but fortunately for Romeo the injury gods are going to help nudge him in the right direction. Belichick will always find a way to get the most talented playmakers on his roster the football, no matter who they are, or how inexperienced they may be. Belichick won't let talent sit on the bench, even if it means giving the ball to a rookie over a former Pro Bowler. In Belichick's mind, if a rookie playmaker lacks experience then Bill recognizes that it's his job to coach him up, get him ready, and give him the darn ball.

Crennel on the other hand is one of those coaches that subscribes to hierarchy. If you're going to leapfrog the hierarchy of Crennel's depth chart establishment, it's going to take time, you may even get demoted just to test your ego. Don't get me wrong, I don't wish Reuben Droughns any ill will. But Droughns is not what the Cleveland Browns need right now. Droughns is a north-south banger who thrives behind offensive lines that open holes, not creases. Droughns is a runner that can bang away at a tired defense in the 4th quarter and protect a lead. Unfortunately, none of those qualities are going to help the Cleveland Browns this year. For starters, their offensive line is in shambles and has been since LeCharles Bentley went down this summer with a season-ending injury and backup center Bob Hallen retired as soon as he became aware he would have to play for his game checks. Reuben Droughns is the polar opposite of what the Browns need right now. Enter Jerome Harrison. Harrison is a gamebreaker who can take a handoff at his own 35-yard line and take it to the house. Harrison is also blessed with Faulk-like hands and can do the same with any screen pass. Does this sound a lot more like what the Cleveland Browns need right now?

Crennel wasn't too happy with Jerome Harrison after the preseason because apparently Harrison's ego was getting a little too big for Romeo's liking. So what did Romeo do? He demoted Harrison to #3 on the depth chart. Truly a silly move considering nobody who knew anything about Harrison or the Cleveland Browns bought into that. I doubt that did much to dent Harrison's youthful and growing ego.

But sometimes things just happen. Last week against the Bengals, Reuben Droughns got dinged in the shoulder and as a result has missed the entire week of practice.

Cleveland Browns running back Reuben Droughns is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Droughns is suffering some kind of shoulder injury that required him to undergo an MRI earlier this week. Head coach Romeo Crennel refused to go into details regarding the injury, but Droughns did not practice on Wednesday.

'I'm not going to say what the MRIs showed,' said Crennel. 'They are working, rehabbing and trying to get back. They're doing all they can to come back and when they get back then we'll play them.'

Droughns has rushed 25 times for 59 yards and touchdown over the first two games.

Unfortunately for Cleveland, it's Ray Lewis & Co. coming to town this week so it hardly matters who you put in your backfield, but it does appear as though Jerome Harrison will finally get a chance to tote the rock.

Will a rookie runner light up the Ravens this weekend? Probably not. But make no mistake about it, this is the beginning of the Jerome Harrison era in Cleveland. Even if Romeo Crennel doesn't know it, yet.
