WR, Greg Jennings - Green Bay Packers
Aren't rookie wide receivers supposed to be useless when it comes to fantasy production? Maybe so, but it's quite clear that 2006 is fast becoming an exception to this rule. Greg Jennings is quietly earning Favre's trust and it seems only a matter of time before Jennings overtakes Donald Driver for the WR1 spot on a team that will be consistently playing from behind all season long. If you drafted Jennings in the latter rounds of your draft, pat yourself on the back because this guy is turning into a fantasy goldmine. Jennings is already among the top-20 most targeted WRs in the league and rising. The one caveat to mention is that much of Jennings' short term value hinges on Favre staying healthy. Should Aaron Rogers get some starts for any reason, all bets are off. Green Bay's schedule is very pass-friendly, so there appears to be no end to the Jennings goldrush anytime soon.
WR, Reggie Wayne - Indianapolis Colts
I feel bad putting Wayne here in lieu of his recent family tragedy with the unexpected loss of his brother. However, truth be told, Wayne's game has been a little off from the very start of the season. His targets are down, and neither Harrison nor Wayne have managed to score a touchdown thus far. It would be hard to imagine the touchdowns not coming at some point, but reality is reality and nobody expected we'd be a month into the season and see Wayne/Harrison scoreless. Perhaps the biggest disappointment for Wayne owners is seeing Marvin Harrison continue to be Peyton's go-to guy. Many expected, myself included, that this would be the year Reggie Wayne would permanently solidify himself in that role, but it just hasn't transpired thus far.
QB, Marc Bulger - St. Louis Rams
The transition from Mike Martz to Scott Linehan was a rocky one, but it appears that most of the bumps have now been ironed out and the entire Rams offense now has their groove back on. There's nothing sexy about drafting a guy like Marc Bulger. But he continues to deliver quality 'must start' fantasy numbers thanks to the most experienced/prolific tandem of WRs in the league and a youthful, blossoming workhorse in the backfield in Steven Jackson. Hopefully you didn't panic after two subpar games to start the season because there's no reason to believe Bulger will finish outside the top-10 at this point. It should also be mentioned that Bulger always seems to avoid bad weather games around fantasy playoff time, something many people overlook when assessing a player's value.
RB, Reggie Bush - New Orleans Saints
This is a tough one because Reggie Bush is helping the Saints when he doesn't have the ball just as much as when he does have it. Unfortunately for fantasy owners that's hardly comforting. But the painful reality is that Reggie Bush was drafted in the first round in many fantasy drafts while waiver-wire fodder like Maurice Jones-Drew has scored almost as many fantasy points as young Reggie. There's nowhere to go if you own Reggie Bush. You can't sell him because his value is far too deflated at the moment, so all you can really do is hope for a McAllister injury and/or one big game from Bush and then a timely sale thereafter. Reggie Bush is one of those players that will struggle to produce consistent fantasy numbers. Many suspected that would be the case prior to the season, and that's clearly coming to fruition now. If you ignored logic and bought into the hype, you need to seriously consider using that to your advantage and unload him at an opportune moment. He hasn't scored a touchdown yet, and I'm sure when he does it will be on highlight shows around the continent. Wait patiently for this moment and then SELL.
WR, Marques Colston - New Orleans Saints
Joe who? Forget about Joe Horn, there's a new #1 wide receiver in New Orleans, and more importantly there's a new quarterback who can actually deliver consistency every Sunday. Reggie Wayne, Darrell Jackson, Steve Smith, Terrell Owens, Santana Moss etc. all players who have seen less footballs thrown to them than rookie Marques Colston. In fact, Colston is safely in the top-10 in fantasy scoring at the WR position and there appears to be no end to Colston's dream start to his career. If you grabbed this guy on the waiver wire you have essentially won the fantasy lottery, period. Reggie Bush was the wrong rookie Saint to target in fantasy drafts, who knew?
PK, Jeff Wilkins - St. Louis Rams
Anybody who owned Neil Rackers last season, or played against him on one of his many big weeks knows the hidden power in finding the 'it' kicker of the year. Well, Jeff Wilkins is definitely 'it' for 2006. This guy is absolutely sizzling right now and all of the ingredients around him provide the perfect recipe for field goal production. He's already attempted 18 field goals after only 4 games which is even more attempts than Rackers had at this point last season. Kickers are a complete crapshoot from year to year evidenced by Rackers' complete fall from fantasy grace this season. But the rewards for bagging the 'it' kicker are pretty substantial. Right now Wilkins is giving some lucky fantasy owners an 8-12 point weekly edge over competition. Points are points and when they're pouring in from a kicker at Wilkins record pace, it feels like you've just won the jackpot on a Vegas slot machine.
