Giants get insurance policy with Carr

carr2.jpg

David Carr has not had it easy in the NFL. The former number one draft pick out of Fresno State was crowned the golden boy for the then-new franchise Houston Texans, but even though he had the stats from college, the Texans didn't give him much to play with, and even after they got better, Carr seemed to stagnate in his improvement. Then he went to the Carolina Panthers, largely as another option to backup and challenge incumbent QB Jake Delhomme. But even when Delhomme got hurt, Carr still couldn't do much and had injury problems of his own, forcing the Panthers to bring dinosaur Vinny Testaverde out of retirement.

After the Panthers waived him, it was widely regarded that Carr may have had his last starting job and his role would be relegated to a backup role permanently until he could prove he could consistently win. Now the Super Bowl Giants have signed him, and his presence as a backup should be a good insurance policy should SB MVP Eli Manning goes down.

However, is it really needed? I mean, to me this is not a good feeling that Manning should have after he suddenly matured into a champion, and yet they go out and spend decently good money on a backup QB? If Carr had gone to the Raiders or Packers or even Bears, I would certainly understand, because he does still have merit, regardless of non-gaudy numbers. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me and appears to still ring of non-confidence in Manning.
