George still trying to make it back to NFL

200px-JeffGeorge.jpg

The NFL Scouting Combine that just happened recently in Indianapolis provided an opportunity for a hometown boy to try one more time to make to a place where he was supposed to be a God: Jeff George. He grew up in Indianapolis and lead his high school to two state titles, and he left Illinois early for a chance at NFL stardom as the number one draft choice. What happened, unfortunately, was that like so many stars that just have way too big of heads, George’s rifle arm didn’t win many games and his constant questioning of authority, including several sideline confrontations with players and coaches, ultimately lead to his demise as an NFL QB.

Now, though, at 39, George is still trying to recapture the glimmer of hope and to get into an NFL uniform. And he says he’s ready—he noted “I don’t want to toot my own horn, but I feel like I am 22 again”. So, does that mean mentally and emotionally, or physically, Jeff? It’s a good thing that the failure to live up to expectations hasn’t made him depressed—but how about a teensy weensie little bit of humility? Just a sliver, maybe?

The sad thing is, some team will see him as a good insurance policy, a teacher who can help some young stud learn the ropes and assist in moving that player to the next level. What you don’t understand about a player like George is that he doesn’t think that way, and you’re playing with fire by signing him—he may have experience in leading a team as a QB, but that doesn’t mean he’s been a leader.
