Garrard close to record contract

My, how things have changed in such a short period of time. A couple of years ago, Byron Leftwich was still regarded as the heart of the Jacksonville Jaguars' franchise and someone that had a future with the team. But now, we are at the brink of seeing the team's current quarterback, David Garrard, signing a contract with the Jags that would be the richest in team history.

This has been a process in the making, but sources close to the team have said that when all is said and done, that Garrard will be the latest QB to have a blockbuster contract. Earlier in the year, such quarterbacks as Tony Romo, Ben Roethlisberger, and Derek Anderson all signed huge contracts. The biggest difference with these names are some of the credentials behind them.

Garrard doesn't have Super Bowl rings (Big Ben) or Pro Bowl validation (Romo, Anderson). But that is all circumstantial considering that Garrard is, in fact, one of the better QBs in the league without these gaudy resume builders. As the team went to the divisional playoffs against the New England Patriots, the expectation is to continue to build off of that momentum--and just maybe then he'll have the same awards and titles that all those other high-paid slingers have.
