Free Agency Changing Draft Implications

nfldraft.jpg

Most teams are decently active during the offseason in the free agency market. While some are more than others and some years have more free agents than others, the bottom line is that NFL Scouts who make a living going from combine to combine and look for the best fit for the team must have excedrin level 300 headaches when it comes to the moves a team makes free agent-wise and its draft implications.

Take, for example, Atlanta. Most people had Darren McFadden chiseled in as their #3 draft pick as it is pretty clear that the Dolphins and Rams are going to go after defensive players. But, lo and behold, the Falcons go out and sign Michael Turner, the lightning quick back who hasn't gotten a ton of touches in the NFL but is definitely starter material. So, back to the drawing board--and now it seems that Atlanta will more than likely focus on a QB, even though the QB pool is not as deep as they would probably like it. More than likely the Falcons will end up with Matt Ryan, unless they do something crazy again and get another free agent or make a deal for one.

Then there's the Saints. The NFL mock drafts across the board had the Saints picking up a big name CB in the draft, but then they went and picked up a big name free agent CB in Randall Gay from the Patriots. Now it seems that they will continue to focus on defense and go after a middle or outside linebacker, and with their draft position, they may end up with Keith Rivers from USC if he's still available. If he's not, there's always Dan Connor from Penn State as well.

These are just two examples of what directions dictate the rise and fall not only of players in the draft, but the differing changes for the team's needs. Why not hold the combines after the free agency feast is over? That would make more sense, wouldn't it?
