Footblog Campfire: The State of the Texans

What do you think of Matt Schaub going to Houston? I like Schaub. He's a Hasselbeck clone. Think he'll start over Carr?

I think Schaub going to the Texans is a good deal for both teams. I don't know if he's really worth what Houston is giving (two second round picks is steep in today's NFL), but they really needed to move on from David Carr. He's just never going to be that good. Schaub at least gives them someone who's shown he can play at this level, though how good he really is remains to be seen. I know all the experts are sold on Schaub, but I haven't seen enough to see that he's going to be really that great. I mean he's thrown as many picks as he has TD's...I'm not sold....

I have such mixed emotions and opinions when it comes to the Texans these days. Let's be honest here, they screwed up beyond comprehension at last year's draft. They knew Dom Davis had recurring knee problems, but they passed on Bush. They knew Carr hadn't proven he could hit a barn door with a football on a sunny day, yet they passed on perhaps the biggest college icon in Houston's history in Vince Young. As a franchise, you can't make that kind of monumental error and not have it take years to fix. That's the process they're in now. They're paying the piper for their mistake by signing Ahman Green who has only started in 17 of his last 30+ games and crapped out a pedestrian 3.8 YPC combined over the last 2 seasons and he's now north of 30 years of age. In Schaub, they get a bonafide potential starter who still needs reps and has a growth curve ahead to endure as an NFL starter, and now they've handcuffed themselves to build through the draft to get him. Bottom line: it's nothing short of a train wreck in Houston and it's going to take the cleanup crew years before they sort it all out.

So I'm curious to know what you think about Ahman Green in a Houston uniform? Will he be re-born in a Denver-style running game? Does he have enough gas left in the tank and health karma to put in a full season as a starter?

Ahman Green has always been an enigma in my mind. I mean at times I think he can be a premier back again, but he just seems too fragile to me. I will say that he's a back who's very well suited for the Denver "one-read" system that he gets to play in Houston. I just wonder if he'll remain upright for 13 (I'm not even trying for 16) games. Plus Dominic "Williams" has basically nothing left in his knee so Ahman will really have to shoulder the load. Don't know if he's up for it.
