Elam returns home

Kickers don't usually get a lot of love on this blog; heck, they don't even get much love period. So when there's news of a pretty big-name kicker, we've got to give equal due....well, maybe not equal, but mention nonetheless :) Jason Elam, who has spent 15 seasons in Denver booming kicks out of the stadium, it seems, signed a new contract with Atlanta, where he grew up.

Elam has reached 100 points every season with the Broncos, shares the record for the NFL's longest field goal (63 yards), is fifth on the career FG list, and is sixth in total points. So--it could be said that the Falcons are getting one of the best; and this is true, statistically--but is he really that good?

One could argue that playing in Denver has been the real reason why Elam has succeeded. With its thin air and the fact that for this time he has played for largely successful offensive teams, once could say without the chicken there would be no egg; so going to Atlanta--he now goes to a team that has struggled offensively, and while it is in a dome--it doesn't give him the advantage that Denver did. Will he be good there? Sure, but don't think that he will be as close to effective playing for the Falcons.
