Does the Pro Bowl really matter?

probowl2008_blue.gif

The Pro Bowl is supposed to be the equivalent to the All-Star games for both basketball and baseball. However, there is one major difference--both All-star games for the "B" sports occur in the middle of their seasons, creating hype and keeping fans involved while others get a minor break of exceedingly long regular seasons.

But the Pro Bowl does it much differently--they play it a week after the Super Bowl. Anti-climactic? You betcha. Stupid? Not so much. But necessary? Not really. With the compacted NFL schedule, having the Pro Bowl near the end of the season could be possible, but with only 16 games a year, when and how would you pick? And then with several players in contention for the playoffs, would they even play?

But still--having the Pro Bowl now just seems like it is being played to be played. There's no real reason for it to happen, if you want to give awards for the best of positions, do so, but playing a fluff game like this is just well--arbitrary at best. Sure, it gives the players a little R and R and a vacation paid for by the NFL, but it just seems a mediocre practice at best.
