David Carr: In The Fast Lane
Carr is entering his 3rd season as the Houston Texans franchise quarterback and expectations are soaring in anticipation of his breakout season. One can hardly blame Carr for not lighting up NFL scoreboards in his first two campaigns. His rookie season was played behind a horrid offensive line that surrendered an NFL-record 76 sacks in 2002. Amazingly Carr managed to keep his body in tact and start every game his rookie season. However, whatever luck Carr had left in the health tank evaporated last season when he missed 4 games, parts of others, and failed to get into an offensive groove all season long.
Notwithstanding Carr's truncated 2003 season, the Texans team confidence grew substantially due to the emergence of two Rookie of the Year candidates in eventual winner - running back Domanick Davis and, runner-up - wide receiver Andre Johnson. The Carr-Davis-Johnson tripletts are being compared to the all-star assets the Cowboys and Colts had/have at the same positions. The Texans are on the cusp of becoming a playoff-caliber team and David Carr's high-octane arm figures to be the engine that drives this franchise to the next level.
I think I'm just more comfortable with everything that's going on," Carr said. "I've been around this place so much and I know the guys. And there's a real good feeling when I go into the huddle that I know what I want to get done." - APCarr also has underrated running skills. He's rushed for over 400 yards and 5 td's over the last two seasons proving he is more elusive than most give him credit for. Can the Texans and Carr have a big year? If Andre Johnson and Domanick Davis build on their rookie successes, this offense is highly combustible and could surprise many. Combined with Dom Capers' proven track record building tough defenses and new draft recruits to bolster that side of the ball, this franchise has an extremely bright future whose time may be coming faster than you think.
