Arizona Cardinals: NFL-Bird Makeover Finally Complete
After 9 losing seasons, and 5 last-place finishes in 10 years, the Arizona Cardinals finally decided to take a baby-step toward changing their fortunes. In fitting fashion the Arizona Cardinals were the last of the NFL-Birds* to receive a makeover.
For the first time in 45 years, the Cardinals are changing their look. But, much like the team's plodding toward respectability on the field, no dramatic changes are in the works.Brand identification? I don't know, call me crazy, but when people voluntarily show up to your games with paper bags over their heads to disassociate themselves from the brand and the product, I think 'revolution' not 'evolution' is what should've been prescribed here. The team will unveil a new logo today that will be "dynamic and bold and aggressive," said Michael Bidwill, the team's vice president and general counsel.
"We wanted to have a strengthened Cardinal logo that reflected that," said Bidwill, who declined to provide specifics. "While there's an evolution, it keeps the authentic, classic Cardinal as part of brand identification." - AZ Republic
What is interesting is that when the Arizona Republic ran the story announcing the logo change, they only showed this rendering of a proposed logo (which was not approved) done by local comic book celebrity Todd McFarlane of Spawn fame. The obvious overall trend here is toward meaner looking birds. While McFarlane's logo wasn't fully represented, one can only hope his suggestion of more usage of 'black' is bared out when the team unveils their new uniforms later this year. Arizona should play in black home uniforms, they're used to the heat. Minnesota should be playing outdoors in December. Why teams don't maximize every possible home-field advantage they could have, I will never understand. If you can dehydrate or freeze your competition into submission, so be it. Just win baby!
* Ravens were not included as they were only franchised in 1996.
