Arizona Cardinals: Birds Flying In Right Direction
The Cardinals will not come close to making the playoffs this year, and at 2-4 you might be wondering why they deserve mention at all. However, there is a gradual, seismic shift taking place in Arizona and while there is still a long road ahead, this weekend's 25-17 upset over the Seahawks is evidence that Dennis Green's gospel is working in the desert. While the Cardinals 2-4 record is nothing to celebrate, a closer look reveals how gamely this club has been all season long. The Cards lost by a touchdown to the Rams, they fought hard and lost by 10 to the defending Champs, lost by a field-goal to Atlanta, and lost by a field-goal to the 49ers. All of this without two of their biggest playmakers on offense, Anquan Boldin and Marcel Shipp. Dennis Green isn't likely to get much attention for Coach of the Year with a losing record, but if the Cards keep displaying this kind of hard-nosed chutzpah, he should. While Green has been leading a revolution off of the field, old-timer Dallas Cowboys throwaway Emmitt Smith is leading by example on the field. Many, myself included, surmised that Smith should've retired rather than suit-up for a perennial loser and tarnish his all-Cowboy legacy. Few, if any, thought the Cowboys should retain Smith period, let alone as their starter. We were all wrong. Emmitt Smith has more than doubled the production (459) of current Cowboys starter Eddie George (209) and is currently out-rushing the entire Cowboys team. Despite the improved competitiveness, not everyone is buying into the new-era Cardinals;
Even the Cardinals' fans don't like the Cardinals. A crowd of barely 35,000 (many dressed in Seattle blue) was announced, and that surely exceeded the actual in-house figure. At one point in the second half, the team mascot strutted the sideline, throwing Cardinals T-shirts into the stands. Some fans threw them back. Wouldn't have them. - The News Tribune2 winning seasons in 20 years will do this to your fan base. But notice how the article stated that 'some' fans threw back the t-shirts, as opposed to 'all'. Times are changing in Arizona, you read it here first.
