2007 NFL Fantasy Outlook: San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers were once the swagger and envy of all fantasy football. Oh, how the might have fallen--and while some may continue to laugh about the Niners and their fantasy outlook, don't sneer just yet--here's why:

QB Alex Smith--Ok, he looked almost awful at times last year, but the kid does show some promise. He doesn't have a great line and sub-par receivers, but keep an eye on him. He could be a great bye week fill in or even a waiver wire pick up that pays off as the season goes on.

RB Frank Gore--Talk about your unsung heroes. Gore is definitely a game-breaker and by far the most valuable fantasy player the Niners have. And while many publications literally drool over him, don't forget that he doesn't have a strong QB or receiving offense, so therefore defenses will be stacking the line on San Fran week in and week out. Still, he's a great back, just don't put all your eggs into one basket with him.

TE Vernon Davis--Due to the lack of stars in the WR position, Davis is another good bet to make consistent numbers week in and week out as well. He's a good pass catcher and he will be Smith's first option many times. A definitely solid pick to have.

WR Darrell Jackson--Ok, so Jackson is the #1 receiver and is a proven NFL commodity. But he will be double-teamed every week and he has lost a step. Most people are clamoring over him being in San Fran, I see bust written all over him.

WR Ashley Lelie--Will Lelie start? Does it matter? Do we care? Not really. He couldn't even make it in pass-happy Denver, why would he make it here? The consistent underachiever is not worthy of a draft pick, in my opinion.

So, that being said, the Niners have some decent prospects, and some ones that you should keep your eye on during the preseason and beginning of the year--but go about it cautiously---they'll be better, but better fantasy-wise is a whole different story.
