2007 NFL Fantasy Outlook: New England Patriots

Geeesh. Are the Patriots turning into the Yankees of Pro Football? They choked (come on Pats fans, you know I am right) against the Colts, and then turned around and got some huge, I mean HUGE players for their team, a la George Steinbrenner after he has a temper tantrum when the Yanks tank another year. Not sure how this will matter? Check it out.

QB Tom Brady--Ok, I admit it, for years I didn't ever think Brady would pan out as a fantasy QB. Sure he wins games, but his numbers weren't exactly gaudy. However, over the years, not only has he established himself as a fantasy player, but now he's one of the elite. Precision, consistency, and being on the field week in and week out, Brady is a true competitor and his heart is something to always not take for granted. A great pick for whomever gets him in your draft.

RB Laurence Maroney--Think fantasy owners will forget about him on draft day? Don't bet on it. Maroney only played 14 games last year, yet still put up 700 yards and 7 TDs. Now that Corey Dillon is gone, those numbers should skyrocket. With defenses more than likely giving up the run in defense of the Pats solid passing game, Maroney will exploit it every chance. Another great choice.

TE Ben Watson--Another case of a guy who was splitting time and now able to take the reins. Watson caught almost 700 yards of passes last year, and Brady has always used his TE with efficiency. Watson is one of those guys that could end up being at the top of the heap at the end of the year, so after everyone takes the big guns at TE while you're loading up somewhere else, grab him. It will pay off huge!

WR Randy Moss--Ok, again, another 'tude at WR, but what else is new? No matter what you say, Moss is still one of the biggest threats when he's on the field. Now that he's in New England, he has a legitimate chance at a ring, and so far, he's been nothing short of goody two shoes. He is still a great receiver and with Brady at the helm, he will again rise to the crust of the echelon. Let other fantasy owners talk him down--and then cash in.

WR Donte Stallworth--Will Stallworth take away from Moss' production? Not likely, but while some are declaring this another coup for the Pats, I don't feel the same. Stallworth has always been the prototypical speedster for the long ball, yet Brady's game has never really needed that. Stallworth is still a decent back up, but don't get him too early--he's always been known for inconsistent play and with the other weapons on New England, he's got bust written all over him.

The Patriots should be another great fantasy team--and their defense is awesome as well. I fully expect to see another AFC championship showdown with the Colts, but this time, I don't think Brady and Co. let it get away. Fantasy-wise, they are top notch.
