When a fan thinks of Green Bay, it usually encompasses a vision of cold breath surrounded by people wearing cheeseheads. But to the fantasy owners of the world, it's all about Brett Favre. For years, the Southern Miss slinger has wowed fantasy owners with his gut-wrenching abilities, as well as kept many on edge with some up and down performances. So, what gives this year?
QB Brett Favre--Is he retired or isn't he? Will he play full-time or won't he? These are some big questions surrounding Favre, but my gut tells me he is in it for the long haul this year. If he decides to be a Packer again, he won't be benched or take time off. The question is--will he fumble seven times and throw 18 picks again? At 38, he's definitely over-the-hill, but my feeling is that if he slips into the middle to late rounds and you need a good backup, Favre could be the steal of the draft. Mark my words.
RB Brandon Jackson--Hype has surrounded Jackson as the "next" great RB for Green Bay. However, he's a rook--and while rookies sometimes do well their first year (i.e. Joseph Addai), for the most part they struggle. Jackson doesn't have a great offensive line and with the receiving corps still decently intact, Favre will continue to throw more often since his defense will put them in a hole more times than not, which will prove deadly for Jackson overall. Too much of a gamble, but being a reasonable backup RB can certainly be realistic at this point.
TE Bubba Franks--27 TDs from 2001 to 2004. 1 TD combined for the last two years. 'Nuff said.
WR Donald Driver--Some will be scared away by Driver's injuries, but let's not forget that he has always been Favre's favorite, and that should continue (to me, it was a reason Javon Walker left town). Driver still can get downfield lightning-quick, and he will be leaned on for heavy production.
WR Greg Jennings--This is a guy to watch, especially in the preseason. While Driver will continue to get the lion's share of the receptions, Jennings certainly has the work ethic and the ability to put up reasonable numbers. If he's available late in your draft, pull the trigger. It will be worth the wait.
The Packers will be airing it out in the "frozen tundra" once again, and while it may be Brett Favre or replacement Aaron Rodgers, the Pack are still a formidable team fantasy-wise. RB still is a concern, so I would shy away from that area if you have more solid backs available.
